“Use “a” before words that begin with a consonant sound and “an” before words that begin with a vowel sound.”

This rule clarifies that it is the sound that governs whether you use “a” or “an”, not the actual first letter of the word.


1) The word “hour” begins with the consonant “h”. But when we pronounce, “h” is silent, so the word has a vowel sound. Thus, “an hour” is correct instead of “a hour”.

2) Let’s take the other word “university”. It begins with the vowel “u”. But when we pronounce, it begin with the consonant “y”. Therefore, “a university” is correct, instead of “an university”.

If we pronounce MBA, it sounds as a-e-m-b-a, which starts with vowel sound. Thus, as per the rule mentioned above we must use “an” before MBA instead of “a”. Therefore, “an MBA” is correct, instead of “a MBA”.
